HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK IN ATHLETICS

AA VARSITY WRESTLING

The AA Varsity Wrestling Team lost to Watervliet 53-19 on January 28. Nick DiCaprio, Kyle DiCaprio, Stuart Curtis and Renel Potter had wins for the Cadets.

The team defeated Cobleskill-Richmondville 51-32 on January 26. Jacob Cushing, Cameron Milliken, Nick DiCaprio, George Featherstonhaugh, David Buran, Stuart Curtis, Renel Potter, Adam Miller and Mory Gueye all had wins to lead the team to victory.

The team defeated Voorheesville 46-33 on January 21. Jacob Cushing, Cameron Milliken, Sam Delarge, Kyle DiCaprio, George Featherstonhaugh, David Buran, Ryan Benson and Renel Potter all had wins to lead the team to victory. The win was George Featherstonhaugh's 100th as a varsity wrestler.

The team defeated Mechanicville 42-30 on January 20. Jacob Cushing, Cameron Milliken, Thomas Wells, Kyle DiCaprio, George Featherstonhaugh, David Buran and Renel Potter all had wins to lead the team to victory.

AA VARSITY HOCKEY

The AA Varsity Hockey lost to Canterbury 6-3 on January 17. The Cadets would hold off the offensive minded Saints and escape the first period down just one goal. It was a back and forth affair in the third period as Canterbury scored first to go up 4-1. The Cadets never gave up hope, continued to play hard and were rewarded with a goal of their own scored by Matt Raokoczy, assisted by Geoff Ulmer and Nick Pichette. With the net empty, making it a 6 on 3 in the Cadets' favor, Matt Orenstein would score to make it 5-3. The Cadets would keep the pressure on on the final eight minutes but would not come any closer as Canterbury went on to add an empty netter and win 6-3. Ben Halford stopped 26 of 31 shots.

The team lost tot Canterbury 7-1 on January 16. The Cadets had a number of chances in the first period, but could not find the net to keep them within striking distance. Matt Rakoczy scored off a nice feed from Nick Pichette with three minutes remaining in the second period with an assist from Jake Lahut. Josh Holmes stopped 18 of 23 shots. Aaron Hebert entered with just more than five minutes remaining in the second period and stopped eight of 10.

The team gained its second straight win with a 9-2 victory over Worcester on January 10. Josh Holmes had 19 saves for the Cadets.

The team defeated The Portledge School 4-3 on January 6. The team came from behind to score two goals in the last two and a half minutes of the game to gain the victory. Ben Halford had 20 saves for the Cadets.

AA VARSITY SKIING

The AA Varsity Ski Team came in second place among 18 teams at the Niskayuna Invitational on January 13. Zach MacAffer came in sixth place out of more than 125 skiiers; Jack MacClarence came in ninth place; Connor Hermann came in 15th place; and Xavier Salvador came in 21st place.

The team came in third place among 19 teams at the Schuylerville Invitational at Willard Mountain on January 11. The team had great runs by Zach MacAffer (12th place), Xavier Salvador, Jack MacClarence and Connor Hermann.

The team came in second place among 18 teams at the Queensbury Invitational on January 6. Zach MacAffer came in sixth place out of more than 120 skiiers; Jake Centofranchi came in 12th place; Xavier Salvador came in 16th place; Connor Hermann came in 29th place; Brian Mellin came in 33rd place; Jack MacClarence came in 43th place; and Justin Swits came in 80th place.

AA VARSITY SWIMMING

The AA Varsity Swim Team defeated Albany High 105-73 on January 29. The Cadets had first place finishes by Michael Casagrande (200 Free), Arka Rao (200 IM), Manny Pollard (Diving), Robert Jones (100 Fly) and Sam Schick (500 Free). In addition, Alex Hass, Erik Van Roey, Nour Sultan and Schick took first place in the 200 Medley Relay; Will O'Connor, Casagrande, Van Roey and Alex Zacharczenko took first place in the 200 Free Relay; and Taylor Mextorf, Dillon Flood, Mateusz Dziekan and Wyatt Pritchard took first place in the 400 Free Relay. Nick Moscatello joined Mextorf and Zacharczenko in the "Iron Cross" competition -- anchor leg of the 200 Free Relay, 100 Back, 100 Breast and lead-off leg of the 400 Free Relay -- with Moscatello finishing with the lowest combined time for the four events.

The team lost to Shaker 108-78 on January 21. The Cadets had first place finishes by Wyatt Pritchard (100 Fly), Alex Zacharczenko (100 Free) and Nick Moscatello (200 and 500 Free). Pritchard, Zacharczenko, Moscatello and Zacc Filanova won the 200 Free Relay.

The team defeated Schenectady 109-77 on January 8. The Cadets had not beaten Schenectady in four years so the victory was especially sweet. Nick Moscatello had an outstanding meet, posting wins in the 200 and 500 Freestyles and swimming the anchor leg of the winning 200 Free Relay with Zacc Filanova, Alex Zacharczenko and Wyatt Pritchard. The Cadets also won the 200 Medley Relay with Sergio Rico, Erik Van Roey, Wyatt Pritchard and Zacc Filanova; 200 IM with Pritchard; 100 Fly with Van Roey; and Diving with Manny Pollard. Sam Schick had an outstanding meet, posting a personal best swim in all four events that he swam on the day.

The team lost a close meet to Ballston Spa 95.5 to 88.5 on January 5. Nick Moscatello led the way for the Cadets with victories in the 200 and 500 Freestyle; he also swam a leg on the victorious 200 Free Relay with Alex Zacharczenko, Will O'Connor and Wyatt Pritchard and the 400 Free Relay with Zacc Filanova, Zacharczenko and Pritchard. Manny Pollard added a win in the diving event.

AA VARSITY BASKETBALL

The AA Varsity Basketball Team lost to Nichols School 65-43 on January 31 as part of the 2010 Coaches vs. Cancer High School Challenge at Siena College. Nolan Hart led the Cadets with 18 points.

The team defeated Albany High 86-78 on January 19. Nolan Hart scored a game-high 30 points and David Benoks finished with 21 points.

The team suffered a tough loss to Jamesville-DeWitt 76-70 on January 17 in the championship game of the Juggler Classic in Utica. The Cadets led 22-17 after the first quarter, J-D led by one point at 38-37 at halftime and extended that advantage to 59-54 after three quarters. The Cadets stayed close on the strength of their three-point shooting, hitting nine in the game -- including three by Jelanie Currie, who finished with 16 points. Hunter McCarthy finished with 16 points and David Benoks finished with 14 points. Nolan Hart and Benoks were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The team defeated Notre Dame (Utica) in the first round of the Juggle Classic in Utica on January 16. The team jumped out to a 17-2 lead to start the game.
