NOVEMBER ALUMNI & ALUMNAE E-NEWSLETTER
Giving thanks to the Academies community
Pictured (left to right) are Tucker Jones '62, Austin Woodward '43 & Peter Campito '78; Bill Picotte '67, John Carroll '78 & Carol Swyer '71; and Dr. Sarah Elmendorf '70 & Susie Sneeringer '72.
Board of Trustees member Carol Swyer '71 graciously hosted a reception for donors and friends of the Academies at her home in Loudonville on October 29. The event provided an opportunity for parents, alumnae, alumni and community leaders to meet Head of School Dr. Douglas North '58 and for the Academies to express its appreciation to the guests for their generous support to the school. The Cadet Corps served as greeters and Ilia Karp (Form IV) played the piano during the evening.
"It was a great honor to serve as the host for the Annual Donor Reception at the Academies. I enjoyed opening up my house to such a wonderful group of people who believe in our school and are committed to supporting it. The whole evening was positive, upbeat and hopeful, and it was a pleasure to welcome Head of School Dr. North at the event. He is a genuine and warm individual who has a unique history and knowledge of the Academies." -- Carol Sywer '71
Attention all young alumni/ae
Graduates of the past 5 to 15 years are invited to become part of a special group of young alumnae and alumni called the Pace Setters Club (PSC). Chaired by Sara Strope '96, Heather Stein '05, John LaBoda '98 & Brian Lasky '03, this important and influential group is seeking to make stronger connections with other alumni/ae and set the pace for giving at the Academies.
"We are very excited to offer membership in the Pace Setters Club to our young alumni/ae from the past 5 to 15 years. Members of the PSC will be connected with other young alumni/ae through our online community, special events at the Academies and networking opportunities around the country. This group is going to play a key role in setting the pace for the third century of Albany Academy for Girls and The Albany Academy." -- Kim Verstandig, Director of Institutional Advancement

Taking global action
Pictured (left to right) is Bill McKibben addressing the Academies community; Lew Morrison '62 (father of Amanda Morrison '02) & Mr. McKibben; and Mr. McKibben signing a book for Board of Overseers member Neil Murray '62 at a reception held after the event.
Environmentalist and renowned author Bill McKibben addressed Upper School students and the general community on October 16 as part of the Amanda Morrison '02 Endowed Lectureship -- established in memory of Amanda by her family and friends.
Mr. McKibben stressed the importance of ensuring the future of our environment, how to get involved to make a difference and discussed the global climate action campaign held on October 24 around the world.
Special thanks to the Morrison family for their efforts in putting this special event together and helping to bring such a well-respected speaker to the Academies.
Reunion 2010 -- May 21 & 22
|

|
We encourage you to save the date now for Reunion 2010 set for May 21-22! For all classes ending in a 5 or 0, this is a special year for you.
Plans for Reunion 2010 are well underway as the hotels have been reserved and the schedule is set... the only missing ingredient is you! | "The chance to volunteer for the Class of 1959 Reunion Organizing Committee and to re-establish contacts with classmates -- many not heard from since our graduation day -- was an amazing experience. For those of us who made it back for the reunion, it was truly a 'feel good' time. Memories came flooding back, stories were shared and friendships renewed. Before ending our time together on Saturday night, we pledged not to wait another 50 years to do this again, but to begin plans for a gathering within the next few years. If you are invited to a mini reunion in the near future, don't pass it up. You will not be disappointed!" -- Eric Moore '59

Tradition rules at the Academies
Pictured (left to right) are Upper School girls during Bacon Bat; faculty member Deb Bischoff & AAG Dean of Students Wendy Muhlfelder '67 at a special breakfast held in the AAG Cafeteria; and Upper School boys during House Competitions.
Tradition lived on strong at the Academies on October 16 as the annual Bacon Bat celebration was held on the AAG campus -- featuring a variety of activities such as a Relay Race, Quiz Bowl, song competition and more.
"Bacon Bat is a longstanding tradition that continues to be valued by alumni/ae and students alike. This event symbolizes the beginning of many bonding experiences for our Upper School girls as it brings the students in each grade together in planning and executing the event. It also brings the entire Upper School together in the actual activities of the day and we invite alumna to act as judges -- creating a really inclusive feel to the event." -- Wendy Muhlfelder '67, AAG Dean of Students
On the AA campus, it was a battle for supremacy as a variety of House Competitions took place to determine House superiority.
Walk for Frankie brings community together
|

|
Once again, the Academies community came together as one in support for a graduate as numerous Academies alumni/ae, students, parents and faculty joined together on October 10 to take part in the Third Annual Walk for Frankie 5K Run/Walk at the Corning Preserve in Albany.
The event is held in memory of Frank O'Brien III '84, a well-loved student during his time at The Albany Academy and member of the 1983 New York State Section II Championship Hockey Team.
The Cadet Corps raised $1,500 for the Moyer Foundation in Frank O'Brien's name to fund Camp Erin. The Hockey Team raised $500 for the Moyer Foundation as well. | "The O'Brien family has a longstanding history of support for the Academies, and this event is a great way for our community to give back and support a cause that is extremely important to the O'Briens. In addition to funding cancer research, the Moyer Foundation directly helps families -- particularly children -- in dealing with the loss of a loved one." -- Dave Rider '73, longtime coach at the Academies
