Mid-Winter Dinner a great success!

The Albany Academy Alumni Association's Annual Mid-Winter Dinner brought together more than 70 alumni on January 21 at Jack's Oyster House in Albany in support of the Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship.
Thomas Flynn '65, author of the new book Bikeman that details his experience from September 11, 2001 in an epic poem, served as the guest speaker and shared experiences from his life. He also discussed the influence longtime Academy educators Frank Nash (FN) and JB Colton had on his life, particularly as a journalist and author. Flynn told the audience that "the education that I received at the Academy was all that I needed."
Special thanks to Brad Rosenstein '79 for his generosity with underwriting the cost of dinner and to Paul Feeney ’81 for providing the invitations for the event.

Coaches vs. Cancer a great day of basketball!
Pictured at the 2009 Coaches vs. Cancer High School Challenge are the Boys Varsity Basketball Team; Faculty members Dave Pascone & Mark Wimmer; and the Girls Varsity Basketball Team.
Nearly 2,000 people were in attendance this past Sunday for the 2009 Coaches vs. Cancer High School Challenge held at the Times Union Center in Albany.
This was truly a great day of basketball and more than $20,000 was raised to benefit the American Cancer Society. Our Girls Varsity Basketball Team defeated Schalmont 43-40 at the event and our Boys Varsity Basketball Team won a nailbiter 66-62 over Newburgh Free Academy.
The Albany Academies was proud to serve as the host for this event for the second consecutive year.
International Taste of the World Festival set for February 28

Placements needed for May Projects
Would you and your organization be interested in participating in May Projects? This program is required for all seniors in good academic standing and provides boys and girls with the opportunity to intern this May in a profession that they are interested in pursuing in college.

More than 60 alumni/ae gathered on December 30 at Franklin Tower in Albany for the inaugural Holiday Gathering.
The event was a great opportunity for the young alumni/ae to reconnect with one another and share in the holiday spirit. We hope this will begin a tradition that all of our alumni/ae look forward to in the Capital Region.

Nominations sought for Distinguished Alumni & Alumnae Awards
The Albany Academy for Girls Alumnae Council is seeking nominations for the 2009 Distinguished Alumna Award. Established in 1985, the Distinguished Alumna Award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of our alumnae. The award will be given during Reunion 2009 at the Alumnae Luncheon on Saturday, May 16.

Alumni/ae Speaker Series welcomes veteran journalist

Thomas Flynn '65 addressed Upper School students at the Academies on January 22 as part of the Alumni/ae Speaker Series in Caird Chapel.
Flynn shared with the students how much of an influence Academy faculty had on his life experience and highlighted how the Academy produces so many tremendous writers, from Herman Melville to Andy Rooney. He also read passages from his new book, Bikeman, and answered questions from the students and signed books to round out the day.
Please join us for the remaining Alumni/ae Speaker Series on February 19 with Dr. Alice Kim '89 and on March 5 when we welcome Alison Cooper '81.

Alumni reconnect on the ice...

Fifteen alumni came together on January 10 for the Annual Alumni Hockey Game at the Robison Family Hockey Arena in The Albany Academies Field House.
The graduates had the opportunity to catch up and then hit the ice for some fast paced action!
The Boys Varsity Hockey Team provided refreshment to the players and had the chance to share stories about their time on the ice. |
Companies needed for summer internship program
We are looking for alumni/ae that are willing and able to provide juniors with an internship experience during the summer before their senior year.
The experience can run anywhere from one to four weeks and could be a shadowing experience where our students get to experience a day or a week in the life of a journalist, doctor, attorney, artist or other experience.
