Future scientists at work...
Pictured (left to right) at the 23rd Annual Joseph Henry Science Fair on April 3 at The College of Saint Rose are Zoe DiStefano '13 and Lynnie Fein-Schaffer '13; Arka Rao (Form I); and Maya Raghavan '13, Abbie Stasior '13 and Alicia Barber '13.
Ten Middle School students from the Academies -- Alicia Barber '13, Zoe DiStefano '13, Lynnie Fein-Schaffer '13, Clara McNulty-Finn '13, Mackenzie Moore '13, Sohil Patel (Form I), Maya Raghavan '13, Arka Rao (Form I), Abbie Stasior '13 and Nathan Wei (Form II) -- participated in the 23rd Annual Joseph Henry Science Fair at The College of Saint Rose on April 3.
Arka won 1st place honors for the 7th & 8th grade individual competition while Lynnie and Zoe won 1st place honors for the 7th & 8th grade group competition.
Congratulations to Arka, Lynnie and Zoe along with the rest of the students who participated in the competition for their outstanding efforts!
A taste of the opera!
|

|
Lower School students were treated to a special performance of The Billy Goats Gruff by the Lake George Opera at Saratoga this past Tuesday in Caird Chapel on the West Campus.
The performance -- part of the group's "Opera to Go" program -- brings fully staged, fully costumed performances to schools with professional opera singers and musicians. The music for The Billy Goats Gruff was taken from three famous operas and the story was restructured to focus on a lesson about bullying.
This was the Lake George Opera's fourth visit to the Academies, and they are a popular part of the Visiting Artists Series. |
A hootin' good time...
The 4th grade Scientists on the East & West Campuses learned about barn owls earlier this year, and had a chance to see some of these birds up close and personal on April 2.
Michael Gaylo (pictured above), a biologist who studies and rescues birds, visited the students in the West Campus Lower School Library.
The boys and girls had the opportunity to observe a variety of majestic birds -- including a falcon, barn owl and great horned owl -- and had an amazing experience.
No strikeout for this team...
The Boys Varsity Baseball Team hosted a baseball clinic on April 4 for children participating in a Little League baseball program run by the Albany Police Athletic League.
The community service project was the brainchild of Marc Freed '70, father of Roddy Freed (Form IV) and included two phases. The first phase was asking the community for donations of used baseball equipment to give to the Police Athletic League and the second was the two-hour clinic that was attended by more than 60 boys and girls from throughout the Capital Region.
Thank you to the parents, coaches and students at the Academies who volunteered and participated in this special initiative.
Why should you volunteer?

|
Josh Neudel '97, a Chemistry & Physics Teacher at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA and the son of Science Faculty member Mr. Neudel, visited the Academies this past Tuesday to speak to the 6th grade boys about the importance of taking part in community service efforts.
Josh specifically talked about his volunteering in New Orleans where he himself visited six months after Hurricane Katrina and continues to visit with students from Gann Academy.
He also stressed the importance of sharing your volunteer activities with others to encourage them to do the same. |
