Celebrate a love of reading

Our first-ever Children's Book Festival is shaping up to be a wonderful community event that will bring together more than 20 children's authors and illustrators at the Academies to discuss and sign their books. One of the authors is coming all the way from Chicago!

This event is open to the public so bring your family and friends and plan to join us today from 3-7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase (cash or checks please). Hope to see you there!



Class of '57 Lecture Series
April 30, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Dr. Martin Seligman '60 (pictured at left), a distinguished practitioner and contributor to science, will address the Academies community on Thursday, April 30 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Caird Chapel on the West Campus as part of the Class of '57 Lecture Series.

Dr. Seligman is the Director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He will be sharing findings in positive psychology and authentic happiness as they apply to adolescents and in school settings. Grandparents & Special Friends Day
May 8, Noon-2 p.m.

If you have grandchildren in the Lower School at the Academies, we hope that you will join us for a special celebration in honor of Grandparents & Special Friends Day on Friday, May 8 from noon-2 p.m. on the East & West Campuses. You'll enjoy classroom tours, a musical performance and the chance to see a student art exhibition.

AA & AAG Commencement Ceremonies
June 8 & 9, 10 a.m.

We have selected two outstanding speakers for the Albany Academy for Girls & The Albany Academy Commencement ceremonies on Monday, June 8 & Tuesday, June 9, respectively.

Claudia Lewis '74, celebrating her 35th reunion this year, will address our senior girls about the challenges that lie ahead on June 8. Meanwhile, E. Stewart Jones, Jr. '59 will impart wisdom and advice to our senior boys on June 9.

Ms. Lewis – the aunt of Hannah Maloy '09, Peter Maloy '08, Betsy Lewis Totten '96 and Steve Lewis '94 – received her doctorate in Geology from Harvard University and has had an extensive career working in the geological and geophysical fields.

Mr. Jones -- the father of Erin Jones '97, Brady Jones '93 and Christopher Jones '90 -- is a
well-respected member of our Board of Trustees at the Academies and Head Partner at the E. Stewart Jones Law Firm, PLLC in Troy.

Almost 30 alumnae and alumni gathered on March 12 for a wonderful evening at the home of Steven Sumberg '63, hosted by him and his classmate, Steven Ranney '63.

Those gathered had the opportunity to hear about the exciting happenings at the Academies from Head of School Richard F. Barter and also had a chance to hear about our World Languages Program from Chair Donna Keegan. Everyone in attendance had a wonderful time!

An enthusiastic crowd of alumni and alumnae gathered on April 1 at the MIT Faculty Club in Boston to reconnect and hear from Dr. Barter and East Campus Dean of Students Wendy Muhlfelder '67 about what is occurring at the Academies. Stew Myers '58 hosted this enjoyable evening that brought graduates from 1957 through 2007 together.

Class Gatherings being set for Reunion

Class Gatherings for Reunion 2009 on May 15 & 16 continue to be finalized and will be held at a variety of locations, including on-campus, homes of alumni/ae and at local venues such as The Desmond Hotel & Conference Center and Fort Orange Club, among others.

You won't want to miss out on this opportunity to take a trip down memory lane with classmates you haven't seen in years.


In addition, Sarah Elmendorf, M.D. '70 will be honored during the Annual Alumnae Luncheon on Saturday, May 16 during Reunion 2009. Richard Wallace, Esq. '59 will be honored during the Alumni Association Annual Meeting on Friday, May 15.

The Albany Academy Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2009 includes the 1983 Hockey Team; Jim Poole '68 (Coach); Steve Gunther '59; Archie Coupe '64; Richard Mertz '69; David Steck '79; and Frank O'Brien, III '84 (posthumously). The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 16 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. during Reunion 2009.

New videos added to Archives site!

Archivist John McClintock '57 has added a video page to the Archives website that presently features two films (each one in multiple 10 minute clips).

The first film is a complete visual survey of the Academy from 1938, from Lower School to parades and athletics. The second film shows the step by step construction of the AA Field House.

Alumni/ae traveling throughout the world!

A number of AA & AAG graduates have been doing some exciting study abroad.

Lauren Welles '06 has been in Europe and is currently in Scotland; Alina Keegan '06 is going to Tanzania this summer; Emily Hogan '06 will be heading to Peru; Rachel Fleig-Goldstein '07 is in Paris currently; Sarah Baldwin '06 spent last semester in Paris; and Kristin Keefrider '03, Michael Keefrider '00 and Rebecca Troeger '04 are all living in China.


Class of 2009 heading to outstanding colleges

Directors of College Counseling Jak Bestle and Lauren Carter's work with the Class of 2009 has resulted in these talented young men and women being accepted to many of the finest schools in the nation.

Some of these schools include Boston College, Colgate University, Columbia University, Duke University, Dartmouth College, College of the Holy Cross, Johns Hopkins University, Middlebury College, Princeton University, Stanford University, Tufts University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Vermont and University of Virginia.

In addition, a number of students at the Academies were recently recognized for excellence in academics, the arts, athletics and leadership.

Jake Gao '09 has been selected as a Jefferson Scholarship recipient at the University at Virginia -- am honor granted solely on the basis of merit that provides full financial support for four years of study at UVA. Jake has also been accepted to Princeton and is on the waiting list at Harvard. He plans on studying civil & environmental engineering.

Matt Kandath '09 has been selected as the recipient of the Okechi Womeodu Scholar-Athlete Award from the United States Tennis Association, which honors the memory of outstanding junior standout Okechi Womeodu and awards a $5,000 grant to one male scholar-athlete and one female scholar-athlete. Matt has been offered an athletic scholarship for four years at Stanford University and will attend the prestigious institution this fall.

Hope Wilk '12, Principal Harp for the Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra (SSYO), was selected as the winner of the 2009 Concerto Competition sponsored by SSYO. She will perform with the SSYO symphony orchestra at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall on April 26 alongside the World Premiere Hilary Tann composition. Hope is the founding member of the Harp section of SSYO.

Elizabeth Robinson '11 and Christian Miller '11 have been nominated to participate in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference – which seeks to inspire and develop a global community of youth and volunteers dedicated to leadership, service and innovation – from May 29-31 at RPI in Troy.

Roma Lutra '10 and Samantha Miorin '10 have been nominated for the Society of Women Engineers, Certificate of Merit Award – an honor based on academic achievements in math, science, character and desire for a future career in engineering, math or science. The two will be recognized along with other students at the New York State Capital District SWE Section Professional Honors and Awards Banquet on May 14.

Sydney Gross '11 and Tessa Palladino '12 have been selected to participate in the Eleanor Roosevelt Girls Leadership Workshop, which delivers programs each summer to educate, empower and activate adolescent girls to become the next generation of social justice leaders.


Alumnus speaks about the importance of volunteerism

Josh Neudel '97 (pictured at left), a Chemistry & Physics Teacher at Gann Academy in Waltham, MA and the son of Science Faculty member Mr. Neudel, visited the Academies on April 7 to speak to the 6th grade boys about the importance of taking part in community service efforts.

Josh specifically talked about his volunteering in New Orleans where he himself visited six months after Hurricane Katrina and continues to visit with students from Gann Academy.

He also stressed the importance of sharing your volunteer activities with others to encourage them to do the same.

This year, we have several new programs and camps, including a swim camp, SAT Prep Course, Red Cross programs and a science camp in partnership with the Children's Museum of Science and Technology in Troy.
