The Albany Academy was founded over 200 years ago with the purpose of educating and developing the leadership capabilities of the young men of Albany, NY and its surrounding area. Over the centuries the graduates of the Albany Academy have become leaders in our region, our state, and our nation--and the same is true today. Our goal remains the same, however, as it always was: to bring out the best in boys and make leaders of them through academics, athletics and the arts.

Today’s mission is very contemporary: to provide boys with the “knowledge, skills, and character needed for leadership and success in the creative, entrepreneurial century that lies ahead.” The boys at The Albany Academy learn how to think for themselves, how to problem solve and think creatively with others. They learn how to work hard, manage their hours, and strive for excellence in the classroom, in artistic performances, and on the playing field.

Single-gender education is very important to these goals. Today in American education generally, boys are shrinking back from leadership except in sports. There is also a growing culture of “It is not cool for boys to be smart.” Nothing could be further from the ethic of The Albany Academy, where all the student leadership positions are held by boys and it is very cool to be smart, very respectable to be an achiever. No wonder that the average SAT scores of Academy students are far higher than any of the public school systems in the region or the state.

This ethic of achievement and responsibility is maintained by the boys themselves, urge each other on positively. Through this process Academy boys form lifelong ties with their schoolmates; they become bonded while at The Academy, and then forever.

Cultivating self-discipline and character are at the ethical heart of The Albany Academy. Serious attention is paid to the Core Values and the Code of Honor (stated in the sidebar to the right). From the earliest grades boys learn how to become An Academy Boy: how to have fun together when it is time to have fun, and how to take yourself and others seriously when that is appropriate. Through participation in our student life programs, boys are given every opportunity to succeed in whatever academic, athletic or artistic area they choose.

Faculty members know their students and appreciate them. They challenge them and give them the hours of support that help the boys rise to levels of accomplishment they themselves did not know possible. The Faculty members at The Albany Academy are specialists in the education of boys and young men. Highly qualified teachers, small classes, high academic standards, and individual attention develop boys who are very ready to take on life with high expectations. A visit will show you what these words can only begin to describe.

Code of Honor

As members of the Academy community, we acknowledge that our individual actions and attitudes affect the wellbeing of others as well as the school as a whole. We believe that our community must be built on trust and mutual respect which will encourage each member to reach his or her unique potential.

To this end, we will strive to foster the ideals of honesty, tolerance, and integrity both in ourselves and in others. We recognize that we must have the courage to support and affirm one another and to conduct ourselves with civility in all aspects of our lives. Through self-discipline, commitment, and mutual support, these goals of personal growth and pride in our school community will be achieved.
