Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten Programs

In these single-gender programs, girls and boys build positive attitudes toward school and learning as they engage in individual and large group activities. Students are now ready to move out into the larger school environment, instead of being in a self-contained class, developing not only self-confidence but also a strong sense of belonging to a larger community.

  • Q. What does an average day look like?

A typical Preschool day includes: free choice play in learning centers; library/music/art/creative movement, outdoor play (weather permitting); language arts story/activity; naptime; and lunch and snacks.

A typical Pre-K day includes individual, as well as small and large group activities within the regular classroom, along with physical education/dance, art, science and library classes. Lunch, recess and rest periods are also included.

We plan a mix of activities during the day so that there is a balance of active and quiet sit-down activities and of inside and outside activities. There is also a balance of teacher-directed and child-directed activities. We start the day with small group learning centers, where between two and four children do one activity at a time, and then they switch. After that we go on to a teacher-directed activity. We have what’s called a “special” every day. One day is an art lesson with an art teacher who comes in to our classroom. We have a music teacher who comes in. We also offer creative movement, library and physical education. Because we are on a six-day rotation, we have two physical education periods per week. One is a regular PE class, while the second class is a special class. In late fall and winter, we offer ice skating, while in the spring, we offer swimming. After that we go outside and play on the playground. We have this time to ourselves; the other classes go out after lunch. Then we have lunch, reading time, rest time and language arts. It’s a very full day.

  • Q. How much does the program cost?

Tuition is $13,500 for the full year. That includes the 12-month Preschool, Pre-K, & K program, early bird (7:15-8:00 a.m.) and Extended Day Program (3:30-5:30 p.m.), and up to 10 weeks of Little LEAP Summer Program (June - August).
  • Q. Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, monthly payment plans are available.
  • Q. Are the children allowed "free time" to play each day?

Yes, children in both programs are allowed some time to choose what they want to play with every day.
  • Q. Does the program offer co-ed or single-gender classes?

Our Preschool is co-ed and is housed on The Albany Academy campus. The Albany Academy and Albany Academy for Girls each hosts its own single-gender Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs.
  • Q. What makes The Albany Academies Preschool, Pre-K, & K programs different from other Preschool, Pre-K, & K offerings or daycare centers in the area?

The program’s cost is competitive with other full-day, year-round daycare programs in the area, and you are getting a much higher value for your money. Our Albany location is convenient for parents who live and/or work in the Greater Capital District area. Children and adults receive the benefits of a truly academic and well-rounded Preschool, Pre-K & K experience, with the same hours offered by traditional daycare centers Preschool, Pre-K & K students have access to the same educational assets as older students: a nurturing faculty with more than 30 years of experience in early childhood education; a 50-acre campus including an ice rink, indoor swimming pool and new playground; and small class sizes for an enriching environment.

Being a part of a larger school, the Preschool students are always invited to join into large school activities and develop that feeling of community within the school. We also have community service days where we work with older students. We plan activities where the older boys come and work in the classroom with the Preschool kids. For example, in October we do a food drive and make bird feeders. At the end of the year we get together again and build a birdhouse. We also invite our big boy buddies down throughout the year.
