World Language
Fifth grade students have the opportunity to complete their Lower School language choice of French or Spanish. All sixth grade students take Latin. The Middle School program offers the choice of Latin or French at the Form I level. Students in Form II have the choice of taking Spanish, Latin or French. All Middle School students build upon their language skills through various lessons and activities so that they have the ability to continue to take a World Language in the Upper School.

- FORM I: As students gain confidence in their ability to speak and understand French, they learn more complex language structures to support their own writing and speaking. Greater facility with verb tenses and vocabulary is emphasized, as well as expanded use of pronouns, prepositional phrases and adjectives. Skits, dialogues, and videos are used to make learning French come alive. Students use the Internet to gain access to current documents and to research various Francophone countries, and to access the Quia educational program for grammar and vocabulary.
- FORM II: Students continue to speak and write extensively in French, while learning more about French culture. Study of the French language continues with verb tenses, reflexive verbs, indirect and direct object pronouns and other complex grammar structures. Students also complete an intermediate level reader. Students use the Internet to gain access to current documents and to research various Francophone countries, and to access the Quia educational program for grammar and vocabulary.
- SIXTH GRADE: Latin introduces students to the rudiments of the Latin language. Students will become proficient in working with an inflected language by learning the endings of the first, second, and third declensions and their correlation to English grammar. Students will be introduced to Greek and Roman mythology, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and the Aeneid.
- FORM I: This introduction to Latin includes a foundation in the study of languages and makes the link between Latin and modern Romance languages. Vocabulary, verb conjugations, derivatives and grammar structures combine with the study of ancient Rome and mythology.
- FORM II: This course is a continuation of Latin Form I/Grade 7, with greater emphasis on translations and syntactical structures. In addition to Roman civilization, students study common Latin abbreviations and quotations and Ovid’s Metamorphosis. The students undertake an in-depth study of Roman history, from its mythological beginning to Caesar Augustus's rule.
- FIFTH GRADE: Students build their knowledge of basic sentence structure (-ar verbs, the verbs to be and to have, position and agreement of adjectives, possessive adjectives) and expand their vocabulary (rooms in the house, household items, food, clothes, and family). Daily group activities, games, songs, skits, and cultural activities promote active, accurate use of the material. Students practice writing short paragraphs.
