Altamont's Jay Leach Makes NHL Coaching Debut with Kraken

Altamont native and former Albany Academy standout Jay Leach made it as a player, and now, he's making it as a coach on the world's biggest hockey stage.

Leach Was Born In...
Syracuse, technically. But, according to The Times Union, he moved to Altamont at two years old. He played for Albany Academy, and was an absolute star in the minor hockey ranks.

Leach Moved to the College Ranks
BRIDGEPORT, CT - FEBRUARY 4: Jay Leach #2 of the Providence Bruins skates during the game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Arena at Harbor Yard on February 4, 2006 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Tigers won 4-1.

Leach Made it to the NHL The First Time
It was just two games in 2005-06, but Leach had finally cracked the NHL, racking up seven penalty minutes in the process. This physical play would become a trend for Jay Leach.

Leach Bounced Around a Bit in the League
After two games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Leach moved to the New Jersey Devils organization, where he spent the majority of his professional career. He played 24 games with the big club in 2008-09.

Oh Yeah, He Wasn't Weak, Either
See, I told you he wasn't afraid to be physical. Matt Martin is no slouch on the opposite side of those punches.

Leach Even Played North of the Border
Leach played seven games with the Montreal Canadiens after leaving New Jersey, and somehow, got stuck with these brutal jerseys in one of them. Talk about unlucky.

Leach Moved to the Sharks
He played the most games in one season in his NHL career with the Sharks, playing 28. He also scored his one career goal with San Jose, too.

He Had a Chance to Return Home
With his professional playing days beginning to wind down, Leach went back to the Devils, serving as the assistant captain and later captain of the Albany Devils before his retirement in 2013.

Leach Joined the Coaching Ranks
Jay Leach began coaching in 2014, with a team in Germany. After one year as an assistant in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Leach joined the Providence Bruins as an assistant coach in 2016. When Bruce Cassidy was promoted to head coach of the Boston Bruins, Leach was promoted to head coach of the P-Bruins the next year.

Now, Leach is Back in the NHL
After four years building the Baby Bruins in Providence, Leach was appointed to Dave Hakstol's staff, as an assistant coach with the Seattle Kraken. It took less than a decade for Leach to return to the NHL, and a head coaching position in the big leagues isn't far off.
