The Albany Academies offers a broad variety of opportunities for international students looking to attend our school and have a completely American school experience. Spending a year at our school is an experience that will enrich the rest of your son’s life.
Living in another country for a year is something that most people never have the opportunity to do. Students will return home with new knowledge, cultural understanding, maturity and lifelong friends from their host country. Our cultural exchange program provides a unique experience for foreign students by allowing them to live with a host family while attending The Albany Academies.
The Albany Academies has a small concentration of international students from throughout the world, including Canada, China, Germany, Hungary, South Korea and more. International students at the Academy live with host families in the Capital Region that are arranged with assistance from the school; we also have students from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Our school offers numerous international student assemblies for our young men to discuss their cultural backgrounds to the student body, along with international clubs that provide support and camaraderie to students of various backgrounds. This past school year, Albany Academy for Girls & The Albany Academy initiated cultural exchanges with sister schools in Cusco, Peru; Changsha, China; and Vannes, France to introduce our students to their peers abroad. In addition, our school offered a 10-day trip to China in March 2010 as part of an Albany Academies/Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts travel course. Students had the opportunity to explore a variety international cities such as Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Italy, Greece and Turkey.
The Albany Academies is located in the heart of the Tech Valley region in Albany, New York, a 19-county section of eastern New York State that stretches from the Canadian border to Orange County. New York's Tech Valley offers rewarding career and business prospects, world-class educational and research facilities and a fantastic quality of life. We are located just three hours from major cities such as New York City, Boston, MA and Montreal; Albany International Airport is located in Albany, NY with flights to locations around the world.
Tech Valley is home to more than 40 colleges and universities such as The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany, RPI, Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy that offer incredible educational opportunities in a variety of fields. The Tech Valley labor force is nationally-recognized for being comprised of innovative, intelligent workers.
Already the home of major, international companies such as General Electric, IBM, GLOBALFOUNDRIES and others, Tech Valley also boasts thousands of small to mid-size companies that employ tens of thousands of workers and generate billions of dollars in economic impact. We celebrate the four seasons of Tech Valley and offer numerous activities to take part in during the fall, spring, summer and winter months.
Host Families
International students are placed with host families while attending the Academy; these arrangements are made by the students themselves or with the assistance from the school. Often, these host families already have a child attending our school and are thus fully vested in their success. The host family provides for the student in their home the following: food, normal household amenities and a bedroom of his/her own. Host families also provide, or arrange for, transportation to and from school each day, and to various school events.
